Master Italia has recently announced that it has obtained GOTS and GRS product certifications. The first certifies the resale of our  hats and caps made of 100% organic cotton, in accordance with the *Global Organic Textile Standard, while the second certifies the resale of hats and caps containing at least 20% pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled material, in accordance with the **Global Recycled Standard.

But why has it been so important for us to obtain these two certifications? We’ll explain it to you in this article.

The flower in the desert

The Paris Agreement has set a crucial goal for the survival of the planet: to keep global warming below 2°C and preferably below 1.5°C. Among the sectors that must respond to this challenge is the fashion industry – the world’s third-largest manufacturing sector – which contributes up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Atlantis, aware of this responsibility, has set itself an ambitious goal: to produce 100% of Atlantis products by 2025 by introducing elements that reduce their environmental impact, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

From goal to strategy: the need for a “compass”

To achieve this milestone, Atlantis has developed the Product Sustainability Framework, a real strategic guide that has outlined the sustainability guidelines and criteria ensuring more responsible purchasing and production choices (without neglecting the needs of customers and partners).

The Framework then included the so-called “compass” criteria that make the path towards sustainable production “concrete” and measurable:

  1.  Reliable certifications, documentation, and verification testing
  2.  Life cycle analysis / external studies with scientific relevance
  3.  Traceability and transparency
  4.  Respect for people in the supply chain.

One of the key aspects of this Framework is the role of environmental certifications. Certifications provide important guidance for recognizing the sustainable practices adopted by the company.

With the data at hand: certifications as a tool for responsible production

The European Commission has estimated that 42% of sustainability-related claims found online are exaggerated, false, or misleading and may constitute unfair commercial practices.

Understanding the gravity of this practice has thus created the need to demonstrate our commitment to more responsible production with officially recognized global certifications. Examples of this are the GOTS and GRS certifications that Atlantis Headwear has recently obtained.

*The Global Organic Textile Standard is promoted by leading international organizations in organic agriculture and requires the issuance of a third-party verified statement attesting to: the content of natural fibers from organic farming in both intermediate and finished products, maintaining traceability throughout the entire production process, restrictions on the use of chemicals, and compliance with environmental and social criteria at all stages of the production chain.

**The Global Recycled Standard is the most important voluntary international standard for recycled textiles and is promoted by the non-profit Textile Exchange. It requires the issuance of a third-party verified statement guaranteeing the percentage of recycled material and tracking it at every stage of the supply chain until it reaches the finished product. It also ensures that companies throughout the production chain have met social, environmental, and chemical requirements.
